Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy in Boca Raton, Florida

Parts work for those seeking steady, focused care.

A Different Way of Understanding Yourself

Most of us carry parts of ourselves that seem to work against each other. One part wants to move forward, while another holds back. One part longs for closeness, while another keeps its distance to stay safe. These inner conflicts are not signs that something is wrong with you. They are the mind's way of protecting you, often shaped long ago.

Internal Family Systems, or IFS, offers a gentle, respectful way to understand these parts and the roles they have taken on. Rather than trying to silence or override them, IFS helps you turn toward them with curiosity, so the patterns that once felt stuck can begin to ease.

What IFS Is

Internal Family Systems is an evidence-based approach developed by Richard Schwartz, founder of the IFS Institute. It is built on a simple but powerful idea: the mind is naturally made up of many parts, and at the center of each of us is a calm, grounded Self that is capable of leading.

Some parts carry pain from earlier experiences. Others work hard to manage that pain, sometimes through control, avoidance, or self-criticism. In IFS, none of these parts are treated as the enemy. Each one is understood as having a purpose. The work is about building a trusting relationship with these parts from the steadiness of Self, so they no longer have to carry their burdens alone.

What Makes This Approach Different

A lot of therapy focuses on changing thoughts or behaviors from the outside in. IFS works differently. It does not ask you to argue with the parts of yourself you do not like, or to push past them through willpower.

Instead, it slows down and listens. It assumes that even the most difficult patterns, the harsh inner voice, the part that shuts down, the part that overworks, developed for a reason. When those parts feel understood rather than managed, they tend to soften on their own. That is where lasting change begins, not through force, but through understanding.

What IFS Can Help With

IFS can be a good fit for people working through:

  • Long-standing patterns in relationships

  • Harsh self-criticism or a persistent inner critic

  • Anxiety, overwhelm, or feeling pulled in different directions

  • Old wounds from childhood that still shape the present

  • Feeling stuck despite years of effort or previous therapy

  • A sense of disconnection from yourself or your own needs

It pairs naturally with the depth-oriented work at the heart of this practice, and can be used on its own or alongside other approaches when it fits.

What to Expect From This Work

Parts work is paced with care. There is no pressure to dig into everything at once or to reach quick conclusions. Sessions create space to notice what is happening inside, to get to know the parts that show up, and to understand what they have been carrying.

Over time, many people describe feeling less at war with themselves. The inner critic quiets. The anxious part relaxes a little. Decisions that once felt impossible become clearer. This is not about fixing you. You were never broken. It is about helping the parts of you find a steadier way of being together.

I am trained in Internal Family Systems through the IFS Institute, the training body founded by Richard Schwartz. After working with hundreds of clients over more than twenty years, I have come to deeply respect how protective and purposeful our inner parts really are.

My approach is steady, attachment-informed, and unhurried. I am not here to rush you toward change or to treat any part of you as a problem to be removed. I am here to help you understand yourself more fully, with the kind of patience and care that allows real healing to take hold.
